Lightning Bolt – Fantasy Empire

The cosmically brutal duo of Brian Gibson and Brian Chippendale have returned after 6 years since their last full length record. And all the classic, signature elements are in tact: the high-tuned about-to-snap hyperactive drums, the squeezed and choked high-gain buzz of a wall of amplifiers, and the distorted echo of otherworldly vocals. But there’s some expansion to this reliable sound on Fantasy Empire, some new territory that keeps the attention of easily bored listeners while not disappointing the perpetually devout LB fanatics.

And at the risk of sounding trite, I must say this is clearly their most musical of any effort, with structures not simply exploratory, but arriving to what is undeniably a hook. Laugh if you want, but this is easily Lightning Bolt’s pop album. But don’t be a disenchanted purist, loyal LB fan, because they definitely still bring the noise in an endless array of psychedelic experimentation.
