Orcutt’s 2011 phenomenon How the Thing Sings set the Harry Pussy guitarist at the top of the mind-bending guitar mountain, and with Why Does Everybody Love Free Music But Nobody Loves Free People?, he’s dug his feet into the rocks and cemented his position at the top. This new limited private press cassette on Palilalia Records collects instances from his American and European tour throughout 2011 and finds Orcutt at his most aggressive acoustic work, reaching the limits of his steel-wound strings and pushing forward all the more, with everything constantly sounding on the verge of breaking.
Intensity isn’t a gimmick of Orcutt, it is a bi-product of the hyper imagination of one of the most skilled guitarists of all time. And would the most skilled guitarist not make his guitar smoke? Violence is a necessary consequence of his mastery, and his caps-locked guitar fits beautifully with his speaking-in-tongues vocal style that shapes and reshapes with inarticulate eloquence.
How the Thing Sings demonstrated that there is no one like Orcutt. This tape verifies that. And also like its predecessor, it comes highly recommended.
